Start/Finish points

Start – Manly. We recommend taking a ferry across the harbour as a perfect way to start the walk. If you’re in the northern suburbs, take a bus to Manly.

Finish – Spit Bridge. Take a bus to Manly and then a ferry back, or a bus to the city or northern suburbs.

Route

1. From Manly Cove walk along the Esplanade, behind Underwater World, following the path to King’s Avenue to North Harbour Reserve in Fairlight.

2. Cross the reserve to Harbour Street. Turn left at Clarence Street to cross a wooden bridge into Gouley Ave. Turn left, going through Wellings Reserve and on the Forty Baskets Beach.

3. Walk across the rocks to Sydney Harbour National Park. At a track junction, take the track to Reef Beach. The track now climbs away from the foreshore.

4. After another 200m there is a junction – the track south leads to Crater Cove. To continue on the path keep on the steep slope. To the right of the main trck is a track to Arabanoo Lookout.

5. At this point on the main track you should see Tania Park. Follow the roadway south west, and leave the road to follow a track to Grotto Point Lookout.

6. Past the lookout the track drops down. To visit Grottto Point Lighthouse, watch for the marker showing the way. It takes about 20 minutes return to see the lighthouse.

7. Back on the main track, head west down a set of steps. Pass Castle Rock, and follow the shoreline pathway for another 20 minutes to emerge on Clontarf Beach.

8. Walk along the beach to a sign which will point you up some steps and on to the track to Fisher Bay.

9. Walk along a boardwalk, then through a patch of sub-tropical rainforest.

10. The next 200m follows an old tram route to Ellery’s Point Reserve to arrive at the Spit.

11. To return to Manly by bus, use the pedestrian underpass to cross under Spit Road to a bus stop. Alternatively, take a bus to the city from the side of the road you arrived at.
